Drug Coverage
- Available to everyone with Medicare
- Insurance companies and health plans work
with Medicare to provide choice of drug plans
- Variety of options with different coverage
and different costs
- Enrollment is voluntary
Notes:
- Enrollment period generally starts 3 months before month person
turns 65 and ends 3 months after that month.
- Disabled enrollees may have different periods.
- May be higher premium if person doesn’t join when first eligible
and doesn’t already have drug coverage that, on average, is at least
as good as the standard Medicare prescription drug coverage.
- Enrollees pay a monthly premium, varying by plan, a yearly
deductible and part of the cost of prescriptions, including a
copayment or coinsurance.
- If enrollee has limited income and resources and qualifies for extra
help, may not have to pay premium or deductible.
